Why Does The American Flag At Fort De Soto Only Have 45 Stars?
Bet that you never noticed this? Why does the American flag at Fort DeSoto have only 45 stars?
If you’ve ever visited this historic Tampa Bay landmark, you probably never noticed that Old Glory waving in front of the mortar battery has only 45 stars. What’s the deal with that?
Some people believe that it represents when Florida became a state. Sorry, the Sunshine State joined the Union in 1845 and would have been part of the 27 star American flag.
Here’s a hint: Fort DeSoto was built between 1898 and 1902.
The flag that flies above the Battery Laidley mortars is a replica from that time when there were 45 states in the Union. This mortar battery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
So the next time you’re at Fort DeSoto, head on over to the mortar battery and count the stars on the American flag. You’ll get 45.
