Shipping Container Apartments Are Coming To St. Petersburg
Here’s one way to combat the rising costs of rent in the Tampa Bay area. Shipping container apartments are coming to St. Petersburg.
This new apartment complex will be blocks away from Central Avenue and Tropicana Field and will feature 31 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom units. These shipping container apartments are the brainchild of Johnathan Sands and his company, Stress Free Housing.
“With the cost of construction going up so much, I don’t know that we could be could be competitive and bring a product to market because of the rising costs,” Sands explained. “As a shipping container, it’s already built, highly durable and because the shell is already there, the construction can go much faster than typical construction and stick build.”
Each apartment will be about 320 square-feet in size and will be priced about 30% lower than the average apartment in downtown St. Pete. If you’ve ever been to Ikea, you might have seen what can be done with less square footage, so these container apartments have potential to be pretty sweet. Shipping container homes are the real deal so using these pre-fab units to make affordable downtown housing seems like a logical step.
Sands expects construction to be completed in around 12 to 14 months.
