Giant Parachuting Spiders Could Be Invading Florida
Keep an eye to the skies because giant parachuting spiders could be invading Florida!
The Joro spider is an invasive species that has been in Georgia since 2013 and has been spreading across the southeast. These spiders are about the size of a human hand and are native to Korea, China, Taiwan, and Japan. Now the creepier part: Joro spiders travel by ballooning, or parachuting, with their webs!
The University of Georgia has done some research on these bright yellow, blue-black and red spiders. It seems like the Joro spiders could spread through most of the U.S. Eastern Seaboard. On the positive side, these spiders “don’t appear to have much of an effect on local food webs or ecosystems.” The Joro spiders have developed a taste for adult brown marmorated stink bugs. Also their webs also capture mosquitoes and biting flies.
It’s too early to determine if the Joro spiders will be harmful to the ecosystem but the size of their webs make them hard to miss.
So be on the lookout for giant parachuting spiders, they might be heading into Florida!
