More Than 16,000 Fish To Be Released Into Gulf Because Of Red Tide
Who’s ready to go fishing??
Red tide in Florida was bad bad bad! It killed so many dolphins, manatees, sea turtles and thousands of fish.
So a nonprofit group is teaming up with an energy company to release more than 16,000 redfish into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Coastal Conservation Association of Florida and Duke Energy oversaw the first of the releases Tuesday in Pasco County with help from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The releases will span eight Southwest Florida counties affected by last year’s devastating red tide.
Both Collier and Lee counties are slated to have releases sometime in early March. Hillsborough, Pinellas, Sarasota, Charlotte and Manatee also have releases scheduled.
They say It’s a small step to revitalizing the population. When an adult female Redfish spawns… she can produce around 1 million eggs.
Hopefully this will help and we won’t see any red tide back in this area for a long time!
