Hurricane Michael Failed To End Gulf Coast’s Red Tide
Did it do any good or make it worse?
I was just thinking this am… ya know, I would really like to get back to the beach, do some paddle boarding and take my dog swimming…is this red tide thing over? The answer is no. Hurricane Michael did not wash out the red tide like some of us were hoping.
Michael failed to break up a patchy and toxic algae bloom that has lingered in the Gulf of Mexico for the last year and now they are saying the red tide outbreak could continue to cause problems in the weeks ahead. Ugh.
The peeps from the University of Florida say Hurricanes can break up algae blooms, but they also drop fresh water and increase nutrient-rich runoff from land, which can make them worse.
