So we knew there would be hurricane make-up days for the school counties around Tampa Bay. Hillsborough County Public Schools have revealed their hurricane make-up days for the 2024-2025 school year. Those will still be the same moving forward.
The Hurricane Make-Up Days
So here are some of the changes. After Hurricane Helene hit, they announced that there would be no early release Mondays anymore through the end of 2024. Now they have extended the no early release Monday’s through the end of the school year except for January 6 and January 13. All other Mondays will now be full days. Also, semester one exams are waived for middle and high school students.
Usually, both Florida State Fair Day and Strawberry Festival Day are non-student days where students don’t go to school. Now, on Florida State Fair Day, which is Friday, February 14 it is a non-student day for only schools on the west side of the county. Students on the county’s east side will have a full school day. Strawberry Festival Day, which is on Monday, March 3 is a non-student day for the schools on the east side of the county. The schools on the west side of the county will have a full school day. Finally middle school credit and high school credit classes will be adjusted to 50 minutes, but elementary school class minutes will not change.
If you are not sure if the school you child attends in in the east or west district the County has a form with the schools that are in the east county.
Being a parent of two kids in the Hillsborough County School District I was concerned about the Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks being affected. I’m really glad that they did not touch those breaks as they’re important to families all across Hillsborough County. I think what the school district has done to make up the days missed due to the hurricanes is the best thing for the kids.
