Meet Jake Runyan and Chase Cominsky, AKA big cheaters.
They recently were caught cheating in the last tournament of the year of a major walleye fishing tournament trail.
They were even going to be crowned team of the year. pic.twitter.com/Bw7hf96q4z
First off, the event took place at the Lake Erie Walleye Trail Championship event in Ohio. Chase Cominsky from Pennsylvania, and his partner, Jake Runyon from Ohio got caught cheating at a fishing tournament. The two were about to win the tournament until an official discovered the weights while cutting open the fish.
It should be noted that these two men have been winning a lot of fishing tournaments which made people suspicious. Also $29,000.00 was the winning prize at this particular tournament.
How Did They Get Caught Cheating
All the fishermen come back and weigh the fish, the one who had the biggest fish, wins the prize. Another key point to this story is that, the biggest fish caught that day was 7.23 pounds until they walked up. When Chase and Jake weighed their fish, it tipped the scales at 33lbs. That is quite a difference. No one else has come close to that weight. That is when other fishermen starting yelling and calling them cheaters.
One fisherman yelled out “That ain’t a seven pound fish, “check the stomach on that one.” Almost on cue, tournament director Jason Fischer calls for a knife and begins to inspect their catch, and he’s stunned.
He yelled out: “WE GOT WEIGHTS IN FISH!” and everyone at the tournament were obviously more then upset.
What Did They Find Inside The Fish
They found five 12 ounce weights, and another five in the 8 oz range. The metal alone would have increased the duo’s total catch by an estimated 6.25 pounds, with the loose fish filets likely adding another 2 pounds or so. This would have brought Runyan and Cominsky’s average catch down from 6.6 pounds, to 5.4 pounds each — putting them in third place if they competed fairly.
You can watch the video of the crowd reaction after the tournament officials discovered the weights here. ****It is not safe for work, there is a lot of language in this video****
A statement by tournament organizers expressed regret, and apologized for missing any prior cheating — but was thankful the pair were caught in this one instance.
What Will Happen To The Two Cheaters Now
Now an investigation into the fishermen is being launched. The duo have won over $300,000 in fishing competitions in the Ohio area, defrauding competitors and various events. This could lead to very stiff penalties, should charges be pressed against the two, which I hope they do. They should not be able to get away with this.
