St. Pete Diners Could See An Extra 20% Added To Their Bill
Firstly, St. Pete diners could see an extra 20% added to their bill, but it is not everywhere in St. Pete. So this new extra 20% service charge will be only for a group of restaurants and not everywhere. The group which runs Teak at the St. Pete Pier, Birch & Vine, and The Canopy will be adding 20% service charge to every bill. Those restaurants are operated by The Birchwood, which is located in St. Petersburg. The reason why they are doing it is they want to offset minimum wage increases and rising food costs. So, instead of tipping 20% the 20% will already be added to your bill.
Additionally, servers will receive a flat commission for every table that they service. Now, if you want to tip more than the 20%, you are still able to and all of that extra tip will go directly to your server. Finally, host and bussers will receive a higher hourly rate at those restaurants.
You Won’t Be Surprised By The New Fee
You will not be surprised by the new 20% tip added to your bill automatically. The servers and bartenders will be trained to let you know in advance about the service charge. This isn’t the first group of restaurants to do this. A group in Dunedin also did this a few years ago. Some of those restaurants are The Living Room, Sonder Social Club, and The Black Pearl.
Now, I know what you’re thinking what if the service wasn’t up to the 20% standard?. There is no way for you to tip less so, Zach Feinstein, who runs the restaurants in Dunedin, talks about when that happens. He told Bay News 9, “If you get a cold burger, a customer is going to be like, ‘I’m going to leave 10%. But the server had nothing to do with that. The business dropped the ball. They should pay for that, it should cost them the money, not the server.”
Will this be picked up by other restaurants in the Tampa Bay area? If it works for those group of restaurants then it may happen at more places.

Florida has been making a name for itself in the BBQ world over the past few years. We asked you on social media where to find the best barbecue in Tampa Bay and you didn’t disappoint. We put together a list of the 7 Best Barbecue Spots in Tampa Bay.
Earlier this year, Southern Living Magazine named Tropical Smokehouse in West Palm Beach the 8th best BBQ spot in the country. Then, Taste of Home named Shiver’s Bar-B-Q in Homestead, FL, as the best barbecue in Florida. Both of those options are different types of BBQ, so that comes down to personal preference.
Do different states have different styles of BBQ?
The short answer is yes, and they’re all much different from the next. BBQ isn’t a one size fits all type of cooking and in fact, the wood used to cook the various meats really decides the kind of flavor you’re getting. The big four in BBQ are Kansas City, Texas, Memphis, and Carolina Style BBQ.
In Texas, you have the sweet and hot flavor blasted brisket. In Carolina, pulled pork is the go-to. In Memphis, they love their smoked meat and hardwood charcoal. Finally, Kansas City has grown to perfect all kinds of BBQ.
In Florida, you’ll see a variety of types of BBQ. We’re known for doing things differently down here and that’s why some of the barbecue you see here, you won’t see anywhere else. There’s tons of different kinds of barbecue in the state of Florida from food trucks, trailers, and full fledged restaurants. Tropical Smokehouse in West Palm Beach offers gator meat … if that scream FLORIDA, we’re not sure what does.
