What To Do During a Boil Water Notice

A boil water notice remains in effect for the residents of Tampa and some in Hillsborough County. According to early news reports will last until at least Thursday, 12/10. Mayor Jane Castor is also asking citizens to conserve water so the reserves can be restocked.

When boiling water to use, the CDC recommends to let the water boil for 1 minute once it reaches a roiling boil. Once cooled, pour the water into a clean container with a cover.

So what do you need to boil water to do and what don’t you need to boil water for during our daily lives? Here are some of the recommendations from the CDC:

• Showering and Bathing

  You can shower and bathe without using boiled water, but be careful not to swallow any water.

• Brushing Your Teeth

  Do not use the water from the tap. Instead, use boiled or bottled water.

• Laundry

  Share

  The CDC says it is safe to do laundry as usual.
• Ice

  Share

  Throw away ice from ice trays, ice dispensers, or ice makers and make new ice from boiled water.

• Dishes

  Share

  According to the CDC, "dishwashers generally are safe to use if the water reaches a final rinse temperature of at least 150 degrees or if the dishwasher has a sanitizing cycle."

• Drinks & Food

  Share

  You should use boiled water or bottled water to prepare drinks such as coffee, tea, baby formula, etc. In addition, wash all fruits and vegetables and food preparation surfaces with boiled water that has cooled or bottled water. You should also bring water to a rolling boil for 1 minute before adding food to cook.
• Pets

  Share

  It's recommended to give them cooled boiled or bottled water.
