Naples Family Suing NASA For Damages
A Naples family is suing NASA because of something at their house in March. The Florida family suing NASA says a chunk of space junk from the International Space Station fell through their roof. They are siding damages for non-insured property, business interruption, emotional and mental anguish, and the cost of assistance from third-party agencies.
The piece of space junk was a cylindrical object. After it crashed through the house it was taken to the Kennedy Space Center to be analyzed. What they found out was it was a metal support used to mount old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal.
The piece was jettisoned from the International Space Station in 2021 and was supposed to be burnt up in the atmosphere, but it never was.
How Much The Family Suing NASA Wants
“Space debris is a real and serious issue because of the increase in space traffic in recent years,” the attorney of the family suing NASA said. “My clients are seeking adequate compensation to account for the stress and impact that this event had on their lives. They are grateful that no one sustained physical injuries from this incident, but a ‘near miss’ situation such as this could have been catastrophic. If the debris had hit a few feet in another direction, there could have been serious injury or a fatality.”
So, no exact money amount was given, but it only says adequate compensation.
How Much Space Junk Is Out There?
So space junk is also call orbital debris. NASA says that orbital debris is “any human-made object in orbit that no longer serves any useful purpose.” On the NASA website the break it down as to how many pieces of space junk there are. There are 25,000 objects larger than 10 cm. Space junk between 1 and 10 cm in diameter is around 500,000. Finally, pieces larger than 1 mm exceeds 100 million.
So, there is a lot of space junk out there and some will fall down to Earth.
