New Bill Proposes A 32 Hour Work Week
A new bill proposes a 32 hour work week. If you’re like most people, you already work too much. It seems that more and more of us are working over the 40 hours a week that we are getting paid for. With emails and text messaging, it’s easy for your boss to send you work that is outside of the office hours. The work life balance is getting tough for most due to the high demand of their jobs.
A new bill was just introduced to reduce the work week from 40 hours to 32 hours. To me, this sounds like a great idea. And it gets even better. If the bill is passed, you won’t loose any pay, if you’re a salary employee. In an article I read on NBC News, Bernie Sanders is the one who is behind this.
The New Proposed Bill For 32 Hour Work Week
Bernie Sanders introduced the bill titled the “Thirty-Two Hour Work Week Act,” at a hearing this passed week. The bill aims to reduce our work hours. The bill will reduce the standard work week from 40 hours to 32 hours over the span of four years. It will also lower the number of hours an employee would have to work before they would have to be paid overtime. The other major part is that it would require no loss of pay because of the reduction in hours. That is a key point due to the fact that most are not going to take a pay cut.
Sanders had said that moving to a 32-hour workweek with no loss of pay is not a radical idea. He went on to say that American workers are over 400 percent more productive than they were in the 1940s. During the hearing, Sanders pointed out that the last time a Senate hearing was held on reducing the length of a workweek was in 1955, and that it was time to discuss it again. Sen. Laphonza Butler of California introduced the legislation with Sanders, while Rep. Mark Takano, also of California, introduced companion legislation in the House.
What do you think? Would your job be able to function on a 32 hour work week? I have no doubt that this would not benefit us here on QYK, since this runs 24-7…all day, every day.
