Jelly Roll Reveals The Person Who Gave Him The Unique Nickname
Jelly Roll reveals the person who gave him the unique nickname we also talked about the show coming up this Saturday in Tampa.
J.R., Launa and Kevin had a chance to talk with Jelly Roll on the show this morning about his upcoming show on Saturday night at the Mid-Florida Credit Union Amphitheater. It will be his last show of his tour so get ready.
We talked about his first single Son of a Sinner. The song is sort of an autobiography of Jelly Roll, who’s real name is Jason DeFord. The song is about a man who is trying to outrun his past. He’s trying to put his past behind him, but it’s all too easy to slide right back into old habits. Jelly Roll has been down the road of addiction and has struggled with temptations that come his way.
We loved talking with him about his song he wrote with Ernest one Saturday night. It wasn’t planned, Ernest just stopped by one night and they ended up writing the entire song. When he took it to country radio, he was laughed at because of his face tattoos his criminal background and the kind of music he has previously made, until he met John Loba from Broken Bow Records. Broken Bow took a chance on him and well, the rest is history.
How Did Jelly Roll Get His Name
He talked about how he got the name Jelly Roll. His mom was the one who called him that and he said he spent the rest of his childhood growing into the name. Losing weight is his mission now while being on tour. Already down 20 pounds, he has made a decision to take better care of himself.
Another part of the interview that stuck out is how he talked about Keith Urban’s recent comments. Keith is a big fan of Jelly Roll and made some comments recently about his latest album Whitsitt Chapel.

4 Songs That Made Jelly Roll A Country Star
Jelly Roll is on fire these days, having just enjoyed his second number-one song on country radio, “Need A Favor.” He is currently on his headling tour, “Backroad Baptism.” It is his “moment” in country music, and he’s been enjoying every second of it, as you can clearly see on his social media.
He recently revealed that during his first performance at CMA Fest at Nissan Stadium in June, which was televised as a TV special on ABC, he was “trembling.”
Jelly posted a video clip of the performance on his Instagram. He wrote in a lengthy caption, “If you listen closely, you can hear my voice shaking the first half of the song— I was trembling; I was so nervous. Sixty-five thousand people in my hometown stadium- the same stadium my father took me to every Sunday for Titans games. The same stadium I’ve been taking my daughter to since she was a baby.”
He continued, “Thank you, CMA fest, for letting me be a part of your 50th anniversary – I have literally been going to ‘Fan Fair’ since I was a child. This night was unbelievable… to hear 65k people [sing] ‘and God, I need a Favor’ in unison like one voice. Speaking of ‘NEED A FAVOR,’ I can officially say it is the #1 song on Country Radio right now. There is no greater achievement in this town than being #1 in country radio. The fact this is my 2nd number one at Country Radio this year makes it almost unbelievable to me, to be honest – and this same song also held 3 weeks at number 1 on Rock radio.”
Jelly concluded, “Just when I thought things couldn’t get any wilder, y’all continue to amaze me. Thank y’all – this has been an unreal year.”
We celebrate all things Jelly today as he shines in the country music spotlight. Let’s take a look at the four songs that brought him to this place in music.
