Lightning Superstar Out For The First Two Months Of The Season
The Tampa Bay Lightning season is here. A Lightning superstar is out for the first two months of the season though. Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender, is expected to miss the first two months of the season. The reason why he is missing the first two months is because he underwent back surgery this past week. Julian BriseBois, the Tampa Bay Lightning general manager, said about the surgery, “successful micro discectomy.” The surgery is to address a lumbar disc herniation, which will put him out for the first two months.
So, who are the back up goaltenders? There is Matt Tomkins, Jonas Johansson, and Hugo Alnefelt. Jonas Johansson has played for the Sabres, Avalanche, and Panthers. While Tomkins has never played in an NHL game, Alnefelt has only played in one game in his career. Could the Lightning sign another goaltender before the start of the season? Well, they have to do it pretty quick. The first game of the regular season is on October 10th when the Bolts take on the Nashville Predators at Amalie Arena.
It is going to be tough for the Bolts without arguably the best goaltender in the league. Don’t count out the Bolts though because they know how to win.
The Lightning’s Success In Recent Years
The Bolts lost in the first round of the playoffs last season to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Before last season they had been to three straight Stanley Cup finals. They won two of them. They beat the Dallas Stars in 2020 during the COVID year. That final was played in front of zero fans in Edmonton. Then they beat the Montréal Canadiens the next season. They did lose to the Colorado Avalanche on their third straight trip to the finals. The Bolts have three total Stanley Cups. They won their first one back in 2004 when they beat the Calgary Flames.
