Would You Want Brightline Trains To Come To Your Neighborhood
Would you want Brightline trains to come to your neighborhood? It might be cool to “ditch the car” right? An Orlando Business Journal poll asked Floridians where they want Brightline to expand. Currently, Brightline is finishing its Orlando expansion, targeting service for this summer. The Sunshine Corridor, connecting Tampa, is also being considered. I would LOVE it.
The poll included destinations that local leaders pushed for and some that were not formally considered. Here are the results as of June 6:
Treasure Coast area (Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River counties) – 34.8%
Tampa – 29.7%
Near Walt Disney World Resort – 25.9%
Cocoa – 25.8% (Can we carry surfboard on train?)
Other write-in responses: 23.8%; Melbourne – 18.4%; Orange County Convention Center – 12.7%; Lakeland – 8%.
Write-in votes included Hollywood, Jacksonville, Gainesville, The Villages, Fort Myers, Sebring, and destinations outside of Florida like New Orleans, Atlanta, and Savannah. The most selected destination has a chance to add a station. Kim DeLaney mentioned that a Treasure Coast station will open within five years of Brightline’s Orlando route opening due to a lawsuit settlement. Stuart and Fort Pierce also expressed interest in Brightline train stations. TBBJ
