Where is Florida on list of states that drinks the most booze? Alcohol consumption in the United States has been on the rise since 1995, with a total of 7.9 billion gallons consumed in 2020, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Out of the 7.9 billion gallons, beer was the most popular choice with 6.4 billion gallons consumed, followed by wine with 931 million gallons and spirits with 635 million gallons. The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant impact on alcohol consumption, leading to a 46 million-gallon increase in spirits and a 22 million-gallon increase in wine, but no change in beer consumption.
The West Coast is the booziest region in the US, with an annual per capita consumption of 2.56 gallons. Meanwhile, the South consumes the most alcohol by volume, 245.1 million gallons in 2020, but drinks the least per capita with 2.34 gallons per year. Both the Northeast and the Midwest have a similar per capita consumption of 2.48 and 2.49 gallons per year, respectively.
New Hampshire has the highest alcohol consumption per capita, with approximately 4.83 gallons consumed per year. This can be attributed to the state’s lack of sales tax and its proximity to neighboring states. On the other hand, Utah, with the strictest alcohol laws in the US, consumes the least amount of alcohol per capita with 1.36 gallons.
In terms of volume, the most densely populated states in the US consume the most alcohol. California leads with 85.7 million gallons consumed in 2020, followed by Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois. Conversely, Wyoming, Alaska, and South Dakota consume the least alcohol. So, where is Florida?
