New Robot Dog Joins Police Department In St. Pete
Boston Dynamics has been developing robots for use by various industries. Now we can add law enforcement to that list. The St. Petersburg Police Department has added a robotic Spot to their tools.
The pricey piece of technology was paid for by an outside group, so the the city of St. Petersburg didn’t shell out the funds.
The police department plans to use Spot for a number of jobs:
- De-escalating intense situations by avoiding force
- SWAT will be able to use Spot for operations
- To give vision in situations where officers can keep at a safe distance
- Communications through an intercom
- The robot cannot cause injury to people or animals
- Fire/rescue situations in situations unsafe for people
