Post Gasparilla Cleanup: Dozens Of Electric Scooters Found In Hillsborough River
Post Gasparilla cleanup: dozens of electric scooters found in Hillsborough river. Back in the day, post-Gasparilla cleanup involved just beads…thousands and thousands of beads. It was necessary work, too. Those countless shiny necklaces can wreak havoc on our marine life. Fish see the shiny objects, think they are looking at food and eat the plastic beads. The beads become lodged in their bodies, and they die from starvation. Pretty crappy story, huh?
This year, divers discovered a new type of garbage following the festivities….dozens of electric scooters found in the Hillsborough River. Seems the riders took them where they needed to go and then just dumped them into the water afterward. A diving team spent all day yesterday pulling the trashed scooters out of the river.
While there was also other debris removed, e-scooters were popping up with startling regularity. Most of the scooters were covered with barnacles, which indicates that they had been submerged for quite a while. Most of the totaled scooters were found along the Riverwalk area, which has the highest concentration of rentals. The Tampa Police Marine Unit and a group of volunteers wound up pulling lots of traffic cones from the water, as well.
