BUDAPEST, HUNGARY ? JANUARY 23: Budapest Zoo's new born southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) calf tries to stand up after its birth on January 23, 2007 in Budapest, Hungary. Staff decided to take the calf away from its? mother, 27-years-old, 2500 kg, southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum), Lulu, on January 24, as she couldn't feed her new-born. Veterinarians of the Budapest Zoo in co-operation with their colleagues from Germany and Austria used an artificial insemination as there was no chance for natural breeding due to the brother sister relationship of the zoo's rhinos. The expectations of the new birth were incredibly high after on August 2005 Lulu gave birth to a dead female calf. Veterinarians kept Lulu continuously monitored in the last 16-18 months of her pregnancy. This is the first birth of a rhino using artificial insemination. October 25th was a big day in the safari! He is the 11th white rhino born in Animal Kingdom and his mom was the first back in 1999. In a few weeks the newborn will be united with his crash, group of rhinos, on the theme park’s savanna. Check out the (not-so) little guy below:
