How Did WalletHub Determine The Worst & Best School Systems In The US?
WalletHub recently released its report on the worst and best school systems in the US for 2024. To determine which states came out on top, the 50 states went head to head measuring across 32 different metrics.
They didn’t just focus on academic outcomes or school finances. WalletHub analyzed the performance, funding, safety, class size, and instructor credentials to find the worst & best school systems in the US.
“Getting enough funding is essential for a productive school system, but simply having more money doesn’t guarantee success. How funds are applied also plays a big role in how good a school system is, as does the quality of educators, other professionals and the curriculum,” said Cassandra Happe, WalletHub Analyst. “In addition, schools need to focus not just on test scores but also on making sure that students feel safe, comfortable and cared for.”

- Massachusetts: Total Score of 74.36 with a Quality Rank of 1 and safety rank of 2.
- Connecticut: Total Score of 67.06 with a Quality Rank of 2 and safety rank of 6.
- Maryland: Total Score of 63.60 with Quality Rank of 5 and safety rank of 4.
- New Jersey: Total Score of 63.45 with Quality Rank of 3 and safety rank of 23.
- Wisconsin: Total Score of 60.62 with Quality Rank of 4 and safety rank of 18.
- New Hampshire: Total Score of 60.07 with Quality rank of 6 and safety rank of 15.
- Nebraska: Total Score of 58.31 with Quality Rank of 10 and safety rank of 7.
- New York: Total Score of 58.25 with Quality Rank of 9 and safety rank of 16.
- Virginia: Total Score of 57.81 with Quality Rank of 15 and safety rank of 5.
- North Dakota: Total Score of 57.71 with Quality Rank of 7 and safety rank of 24.
- Florida: Total Score of 57.33 with Quality Rank of 11 and safety rank of 8.
- Illinois: Total Score of 56.94 with Quality Rank of 8 and safety rank of 30.
- Indiana: Total Score of 56.92 with Quality Rank of 13 and safety rank of 10.
- Delaware: Total Score of 56.69 with Quality Rank of 27 and safety rank of 1.
- Utah: Total Score of 56.38 with Quality Rank of 14 and safety rank of 14.
But, where exactly does Florida’s score come from? The Pupil-to-teacher ratio is one of the highest in Florida, coming in at #47 highest overall. Florida did however rank #47 out of 50 for the lowest median SAT scores.
