What makes a restaurant “legendary”? It’s not following trendy Instagram eateries or fads. These spots are cultural icons and have been around for decades. Many of these restaurants in Southern Living’s list are interwoven n Florida’s history and spirit.
What Are The 3 Most ‘Legendary’ Restaurants In The Tampa Bay Area?
Southern Living’s list features 17 legendary restaurants across the Sunshine State. But only 3 in the Tampa Bay area made the list.
Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish
Don’t call yourself a local if you’ve never been to Ted Peters. They’re located at 1350 Pasadena Ave S, St. Petersburg and have been around since 1947. They’re known for its smoked mullet and hearty German potato salad.
The Columbia Restaurant
Of course Florida’s oldest restaurant would make the list of most legendary restaurants in the Tampa Bay area. It is known for beautifully tiled interiors, open-air patios, and signature dishes like the “1905 Salad”. They have 7 locations around Tampa Bay but the Ybor location is the most widely known.
Bern’s Steak House
We’ve always said that Bern’s is a must-experience at least once in your lifetime. It’s been known as Tampa’s go-to steak house for YEARS. And even more people would recommend the Harry Waugh Dessert Room, where guests indulge in decadent cheeses, aged whiskeys, and house desserts.
Tampa Bay Locals Seem To Disagree
After we saw this list from Southern Living, we hopped on the Tampa Reddit thread to see what locals thought about the “legendary” picks. And most people did not hold back.
Lots of Tampa Redditors commented that these spots are more hyped up and overrated than they are “legendary”. But I think many missed the mark on this. Southern Living wasn’t saying these are the best restaurants in Florida, but the most memorable or iconic places that have been around for decades, which they are.
