Whenever Apple unleashes a new update, you have to hold your breath, cross your fingers and hope for the best. Seems like every year around this time, there’s some glitch and this one could really ruin your day.
A new feature is supposed to merge your texts. Let’s say for example your friend has two phone numbers. The update is supposed to let you merge the conversations from both numbers or e-mail addresses. Somehow though, Mashable reports this is where the glitch comes in. They say it’s merging the wrong users. They seem to think the problem stems from people who share the same Apple ID info.
@AppleSupport iOS 12 sucks. Our text messages are all screwed up. My sons are coming through as my husband and vice versa. My mom texts me and it goes to my husband or sons phone. Also we see each other’s phone call history. WTH is going on?!

I’m not sure I completely understand but I’d suggest for now holding off on using the merge feature until a patch is released.
@AppleSupport so streamlined conversation had removed ability for a family to use same Apple ID for iMessage with iOS12. Messages to my hubby going to my kids. Apple need a rethink @AppleNews ????????
