Eric Church Calls Out Garth Brooks
Wow. Eric Church does not hold back. In the new issue of Rolling Stone the lip sync debate comes up. If you recall, Garth Brooks did not sing live the night he won the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award.
Garth told Ellen Degeneres, “I love award shows. But for me they’re like the tree is to Christmas. They’re the symbol but not what it’s all about. What it’s about is the people who put their butts in the seat. (They) travel and fight that traffic and parking. That’s who you want to save your voice for.”
In this new Rolling Stone interview, Eric calls Garth out.
“That pissed me off. To me, lip-syncing is and always will be a red line. It’s fabricated. I don’t want young artists thinking it’s OK, because it’s not.”
Eric Church says that Garth’s explanation that he’s saving his voice for paying customers doesn’t do it for him.
“So the winner of the biggest category of the night lip-synced in the biggest moment on the show? **** that! And I didn’t like his excuse at all. I felt like he was speaking for the other nominees. I can speak for myself – I’m not lip-syncing.”
Eric says, whether his voice is ready to go or not, he’ll always sing live: “If I can’t sing, I won’t sing, or I’ll sing badly. But at least you’ll get what you get.”

And don’t stop here… keep reading the rest of the interview. It’s fascinating, honest and raw in a way we don’t see in 2018. Artists are always worried they’ll offend or alienate fans if they take a side. Eric is not one of them. Politics, guns, where country music is going… nothing is off limits. It’s refreshing. The Garth stuff is what jumped out at me first. But the entire interview is just incredible. Rolling Stone has been criticized over the years for watering down its content. That’s not the case with this piece.
