George Strait’s Clever Public Disguise
Going out in public without being noticed can be tricky for some celebrities. George Strait seems to have figured it out, however.
The legendary Texan and widely proclaimed “King of Country Music” has a surprisingly effective approach to staying undercover: he goes hatless. And it apparently works even when he’s speaking directly to unknowing fans.
According to a new story in The New Yorker, Strait was once sitting shirtless outside a Key West, FL studio he was recording in. A woman approached, explained that her husband told her George Strait was inside recording a record. “That can’t be true,” the woman continued. “Why would he cut a record in this little place?”
“Honey,” Strait responded, “I was just in there, and I didn’t see him.”
The feature revealed other little-known facts about the superstar, too. Take his reasons for making the movie Pure Country in 1992. Elvis Presley’s longtime manager Colonel Tom Parker was among those who helped convince Strait to take the part, arguing that it was Elvis’ movie roles that helped transform him into a global superstar.
And why didn’t fans see an on-screen kiss between George and his love interest in the movie? “He thought that a proposed kissing scene was unnecessary (and potentially embarrassing), so he and his co-star, Isabel Glasser, made do with meaningful looks,” the story notes.
