Forbes has come out with their list of the richest people in each state.  According to this article, these billionaires are between 20 and 90 years old.

California has the most, with 80 billionaires living in California, then, New York with 65, followed by Texas with 43 and then Florida which has 42 billionaires.

Elon Musk  is the richest person in America with a net worth of $251 billion.

Ten states in our country did not have a resident that met the criteria to make the Forbes list:  Alabama, Alaska, Delaware, Maine, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia.

Here are some of richest person in each state, their net worth and their source of wealth.

  • Arizona - Mark Shoen worth $4.8 billion - Uhal

    Mark Shoen is the richest guy in Arizona. He is worth $4.8 billion. His source of wealth is from Uhal.  He is the vice-president of the moving equipment and storage rental company U-Haul, which was founded by his father. Shoen is also the largest shareholder in its parent company.

  • California - Larry Page $93 billion - Google

    Larry Page is best known for co-founding Google with Sergey Brin.  He is the richest man in California.  He is worth $93 billion.

  • Florida - Thomas Peterffy $20.3 billion - Interactive Brokers

    Thomas Peterffy is the richest man in Florida.  Thomas is a Hungarian-born American billionaire businessman. He is the founder, chairman, and the largest shareholder of Interactive Brokers. He worked as an architectural draftsman after coming to the US, and later became a computer programmer.

  • Hawaii - Larry Ellison $101 billion - Oracle

    Larry Ellison is the richest man in Hawaii. He is worth $100 billion. He is the co-founder, executive chairman, chief technology officer and former chief executive officer of the American computer technology company Oracle Corporation.

  • Iowa - Harry Stine $7.7 billion - Stine Seed

    Harry Stine made his fortune licensing soybean and corn genetics to Syngenta, Monsanto, and other agribusiness giants. He is Iowa’s richest man and the state’s only billionaire.  He owns nearly 15,000 acres of land in Iowa through his private ownership of Stine Seed, Harry Stine is also Iowa’s largest land owner.

  • Kentucky - Tamara Gustavson $8.1 billion - Public Storage

    Tamara Gustavson is the daughter of B. Wayne Hughes, the founder and chairman of Public Storage, a self-storage company. She is the largest shareholder and is now the richest person in Kentucky with a net worth of $8.1 billion.

  • Michigan - Daniel Gilbert $17.3 billion - Quicke Loans

    Daniel Gilbert is the richest man in Michigan. The majority of Gilbert’s fortune comes from Rocket Companies, the largest home mortgage lender in the US that closed $351 billion in mortgage volume in 2021. He owns about 1.4 billion shares in the company.  He is also the owner of the National Basketball Association’s Cleveland Cavaliers.

  • Missouri - John Morris $7.8 billion - Bass Pro Shops

    John Morris is the founder and CEO of Bass Pro Shops. Morris started the company in 1972 by selling fish tackle from the back of his father’s liquor store in Springfield, Missouri.  In 2017, he bought rival Cabela’s for $5 billion, nearly doubling the size of Bass Pro Shops.  He is worth $7.8 billion now.

  • Nebraska - Warren Buffett $97 billion - Berkshire Hathaway

    Warren Buffett is the richest man in Nebraska and one of the richest in America.  He got his fortune through a successful investment strategy. Buffett follows the Benjamin Graham school of value investing, which looks for securities whose prices are unjustifiably low based on their intrinsic worth.

    Buffett is a philanthropist, having pledged to give away 99 percent of his fortune to philanthropic causes, primarily via the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He founded The Giving Pledge in 2010 with Bill Gates, whereby billionaires pledge to give away at least half of their fortunes.

     

  • New York - Michael Bloomberg $76.8 billion - Bloomberg LP

    Michael Rubens Bloomberg is an American businessman, politician, philanthropist, and author.  He is the majority owner, co-founder and CEO of Bloomberg L.P.   He was Mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013, and was a candidate for the 2020 Democratic nomination for President of the United States.  He began his career at the securities brokerage Salomon Brothers before forming his own company.  That company, Bloomberg L.P., is a financial information, software and media firm that is known for its Bloomberg Terminal.

     

  • Ohio - Les Wexner & Family $6 billion - L Brands (Victoria Secret, Bath & Body Works)

    Les Wexner is the richest in Ohio.  The family is worth $6 billion.   Les Wexner founded L Brands, a global retail empire that included Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works, and served as CEO for more than 5 decades.

  • Oregon - Phil Knight & Family $41.5 billion - Nike

    Phil Knight is the richest man in Oregon. He is the co-founder and chairman emeritus of Nike, Inc. He retired as chairman in June 2016 after 52 years at the company. Knight ran track at the University of Oregon and created Nike shoes with his former track coach, Bill Bowerman. In 1964, they each put up $500 to start what would become Nike, then called Blue Ribbon Sports.

  • Tennessee - Thomas Frist, Jr. & Family $17 billion - Hospital Corp of America

    Thomas Frist is the richest person in Tennessee. He is a co-founder of HCA Healthcare. Frist was born rich, and got richer. The basis of the Frist family fortune is HCA Inc. (Hospital Corporation of America), the largest for-profit hospital chain in the country, which was founded by Frist’s father and brother.

  • Texas - Elon Musk $251 billion - Tesla, Space X

    Jeff Bezos’ is one of the richest men in the world.  His net worth is $151 billion, which means he earns about $250 million per day or $1.75 billion per week.  Jeff was not born rich.  His parents were 17 and 18 years old when he was born, and he worked on his maternal grandparents’ ranch in Cotulla, Texas, growing up.

     

  • Wyoming - John Mars $37 billion - Mars

    John Franklyn Mars is an American businessman and heir. He is the chairman of Mars, Inc.   John and his siblings Jacqueline and Forrest Jr. (died July 2016) inherited stakes in the candy firm Mars when their father died in 1999.   Mars is also a big name in pet care, with brands including Pedigree and Whiskas, as well as food like Ben’s Original rice.
