Lee Brice’s Hits
“Cry”
Smith and Brice discussed his music, starting with his latest track, “Cry,” and what drew him to the song. Brice said, “I’m kind of a sucker for a song that the girls totally get and it draws them in just as much as the guys [who] go, ‘Yeah, man, you know I don’t dance, right?’ or ‘That’s me, man, hard to love.’ Hopefully, songs that dudes that may not know how to say it or how to express it, but I try to be the guy to talk for them a little bit.”
Smith jokingly called Brice an ambassador, imagining guys telling him they really felt his song, to which he wholeheartedly agreed. “That is what it is. When I heard ‘Cry,’ the first thing that hit me was ‘This is one of those songs a girl’s gonna be cool with,’ and see the sensitive side of a guy. But guys will also be like, ‘We’re tough. We have emotion, and we’re not afraid to show it.’”
“A Woman Like You”
Smith asked Brice what the first memory is that comes to mind when he hears “A Woman Like You,” a song he released in 2010, even before he was married. Brice recalled that his buddy, Jon Stone, came over to his place and told him he had written a song. They went into his makeshift studio and recorded it. The next day, they went to a proper studio and recorded it with a full band for the “demo.” That demo ended up being the official version.
Brice proudly reflected, “It’s the demo. What we did in the moment became my first number one record, and it was pure magic.”
“I Drive Your Truck”
Smith then asked Brice about his song “I Drive Your Truck” and if people ever come up to him sharing their own stories related to the song. “Oh yeah,” he said. “In fact, I talk about this song [since] it was a huge blessing in my life, when I heard it and put it out, it was a big hit, right? So, it was a blessing on my life as far as, like, career goes.”
He added, “But what I didn’t realize is how many years later now, still, every single day, every meet and greet or walking down the road, somebody has a story that completely puts me back in perspective that day, in that moment, of how fortunate we are to have what we have at this moment and looking back you know on the things that we’ve lost.”
