Lee Brice to Kids: No Social Media Until You’re 18 or Out of the House
Brice told Smith that he hasn’t been on social media for the past six years. When she asked if he still remembered life with it, he replied, “Kind of. There was a time when I had Twitter, and I would try to respond to people who [tweeted] ‘I was at your show, blah, blah, blah, blah.’ I’d be like, ‘Man, thank you so much for coming.’ But at some point, I even found myself scrolling through my phone when I wasn’t even looking for something like a habit. And I found it to be taking up time. You think about kids and people they don’t know have no idea who they are, and yet they’re letting them influence their life.”
He, of course, acknowledges the good things about social media, saying, “My wife is on Instagram, and she really does so many positive things with it. She networks, and I get all the things that are positive about it, but I also get the dangers of it. When I got so much, I can barely take care of the things I need to get taken care of and much less sit there and scroll through a phone and look at stuff that I really truly don’t necessarily care about.”
Brice explained how he talks to his kids about the “no social media rule” until they’re 18 or out of the house.
He said, “I mean, you can choose what you want to do, but I want them to be at an age where they can make an educated decision on what it does.” Brice recalled telling his eldest son, Takoda, that he’d be “the coolest kid in school” without social media. Laughing, Brice said, “You won’t believe me now, but the girls will be like, ‘Who is this mysterious guy who we don’t know anything about?’”
Takoda eventually agreed, telling him, “Daddy, you’re actually right.” Brice continued, “He’s just out there with all his friends, fixing his truck and this and that, and doing all things, but the social media part hasn’t been like this staple. I’d rather the Bible be the staple in his life.”
Being a country music artist, Brice knows how important social media is and how he tries to find balance. “For me personally, like I said, I can do videos, I can take pictures and send that over to the people who are gonna post stuff for me. I know I have Instagram and TikTok, and we’ll go do videos, and I know they’re gonna go post all this content. We’ll create the content. I just don’t like it to be on my phone.”
He added, “It’s made a huge difference. I’m still overly busy, and that’s without that. And I’m thinking, ‘How do I even do this while I’m sitting there trying to scroll through my phone for no reason?’”
Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just discovering him, this week promises to be packed with great music, unforgettable stories, and exclusive behind-the-scenes moments. Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to hear from Lee Brice on Backstage Country!
