NFL players have been providing us with entertainment since the 1920’s. Sometimes I think we forget that they actually have lives outside of football. Some of them live a long life while enjoying the fruits of their labor, others unfortunately pass away, way too soon. I live in St. Petersburg and have become a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Last year a former player passed away which affected many people that I know. Below you will find a list of Former NFL players who died tragically in Florida.

Has A NFL Player Ever Died During A Game?

Has there ever been a NFL player to die during a game? Sadly, yes. According to CNN, Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes is the only NFL player to die on the field while a game was going on. It happened in 1971 during the 4th quarter. Reports tell us that he collapsed on the field as he was heading back to the huddle for another play.

I was not born back in the 70’s, but we almost witnessed something similar last year. In 2023 Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during a game. Myself and many others thought he was not going to make it, but Im glad that he was able to pull through. I can’t even imagine what his family was going through while watching that game. These players put their bodies through so much just for our enjoyment.
