Lainey Wilson’s Exes Feel ‘Moonshine’ Is About Them
Even though Lainey Wilson went public earlier this year with her relationship with boyfriend Devlin Hodges on the ACM red carpet, she still keeps her personal life close to the vest.
However, she topped the country charts this week with her latest single, “Watermelon Moonshine,” and admitted that her phone has been blowing up with ex-boyfriends thinking the song is about them.
She said in a recent interview, “Every boy I have ever dated in my lifetime thinks this song is about them. No! Do you not realize I dated other people than you!'” Wilson added, “Boy, if that butters your biscuit,” they can believe she wrote it about them.
The chorus includes the lyrics, “Drinkin’ watermelon moonshine / We cut the burn with a little lime / Parkin’ back in them kudzu vines / I was his and every bit of that boy was mine / Too young to know what love was / But we were learnin’ on a sweet buzz / There’s never nothin’ like the first time / And mine’s always gonna taste like / Watermelon moonshine.”
Lainey has yet to say who the song is actually about.

Lainey is playing Darius Rucker’s “Riverfront Revival” at North Charleston’s Riverfront Park on Saturday (10/7) and Sunday (10/8). We chatted with Darius last week about the festival and having Lainey a part of it. He told us, “I’ve always wanted to have my own festival, and last year, we finally started one in Charleston, and it was a big success. This year we’ve got such great bands. When we called Lainey, she said the reason she wanted to do it was that the lineup was so strong, and that made me feel so good.”
Rucker added of Wilson, “She’s a superstar. Her voice is amazing, and she writes these cool songs with everybody. But the thing that I love is when you are around her, she just brightens the room. She’s such a great person, and she makes me laugh, and she’s always smiling. I am so glad and proud to have her at my festival.”
