Thomas Rhett: When Wife Lauren ‘Resented Him’
Thomas Rhett is a country star who often sings about the love between him and his wife. The couple met in 2nd grade and today have four young girls together. The marriage looks like a fairytale, but even the most solid relationships have their trouble, and Thomas’ wife Lauren is speaking out about some not-so-amazing moments.
Lauren detailed her experience with postpartum depression, saying she had “feelings of resentment” toward Rhett after their first two children became a part of their life.
In a short film titled “This Wasn’t the Plan,” released by I Am Second this week (7/11), Akns talks about the 13-month adoption process to make their oldest daughter, Willa Gray, 8, part of their family. During that time, Akins discovers she is pregnant.
Lauren said of Willa Gray, who was an orphan from Uganda, “A lot of the adoption process really fell on me because I was the one who was able to travel and be with her, and foster to adopt her for those 13 months.” she went on to say that there were “so many roadblocks,” and then she became pregnant. Lauren recalled “getting sick and throwing up, like, 50-something times a day.” and the whole time, she was “missing my husband.”
Akins admitted she started to “resent” Rhett because he was on tour the entire time.

In May, Rhett released an infectious new love song called “Beautiful As You.” The high-energy anthem features quick-hitting lyrics, giving the first taste of Thomas’s upcoming seventh studio album, which will be released on August 23.
He said of the new song, “This is an anthem for everybody who feels like they out-kicked their coverage. There was one day a couple years back when I was looking at my wife, and I was like, ‘Why in the world did you choose me?'”
Thomas continued, “I get to be with someone who could easily be on the cover of a magazine, and I get to see her in all her forms – a partner, a mother, a friend, even a philanthropist. I just feel like I’ve got a first row seat at almost-perfection, if you will. And like the song says, ‘Seriously, what is somebody as amazing as you doing with somebody like me?'”
He concluded, “Lauren and I are just in a different phase of life than we have been for a while. Now it’s a little easier to go on date nights, do stuff with friends, stay up a little bit later – I don’t know, maybe even sleep in a little bit! So much of my music is a reflection of the stage of life we are in – we’re in a very joyful season – and this song is just the tip of the iceberg to the rest of this next album.”
