Jelly Roll Says He is ‘Exhausted and Unstable’
Jelly Roll took fan questions on his Insta Stories this week and touched on several subjects, including his mental health, after wrapping his headlining “Backroad Baptism Tour” and why he is going without his phone through the end of the year.
When a fan asked about his mental health, Jelly replied, “This is probably too honest, but exhausted and unstable. Definitely when I get through the holidays, and I’ve got a lot of stuff to do between now and the holidays, but when I get through the holidays, I really need to take some personal time.”
One fan asked the chart-topper and CMA nominee for Male Vocalist and Album of the Year (Whitsett Chapel) when he first realized that he was famous. He replied, “This is actually a really cool question. I still don’t think I’m famous. There is levels to this s— right? And it’s like maybe I’m famous to some perspectives, but man, I got friends that are like famous, famous, you know what I mean? So I’m just glad to have a little bit of motion and glad that the music’s touching people and helping people the way it is, but I don’t think I’m famous.”
Jelly returned to the question a few minutes later and said, “I hate to double back on the same question, but I’m playing video games with my friends right now, and they’re all telling me I’m famous. They said every gas station they go into, I’m on the radio.”

Jelly also explained more to fans why he is giving up his phone for the rest of the year. He said, “Honestly, it’s for personal peace of mind and mental health. So I went phoneless at the top of this year for four months, and it was absolutely incredible. Frankly, I just get hundreds of messages a day of just people asking for stuff, just wanting stuff, and I just get exhausted, man. I overextend myself in so many situations, and I am never present with my family because I am always on my phone, and this thing is always glued to my hand.”
He added, “I just got to go phoneless. I’m still gonna have a laptop, and I’ll still post; I’ll still hop on, but I just need to be away from sh– for a minute.”

You may not look at me and know this, but I have a pretty jaded past as well.” He added, “I’ve always said there was a time in my life when I had to make a decision, and that decision was to chase this dream professionally with a good mindset. There are a few mistakes I’ve made in my life and decisions in my life where I could have wound up here, or I very well could have wound up in jail.” He concluded, “It’s almost like a blessing and a curse because we put so much on ourselves. And I relate to him, and he relates to me, and we’re so opposite; you’ve got the cowboy hat and the face tattoos… I think it’s a very opposite attraction kind of thing. The respect is mutual and real recognizes real.”
