Carrie Underwood: The ‘Little Sister’ To Reba’s ‘Fancy’
Carrie Underwood scored her 15th number-one song on country radio, “Church Bells,” in 2016. Carrie recalled that when the song came out, she believed it was sort of a smaller version of Reba’s massive 1990s hit “Fancy.”
Underwood told me about it in a recent interview. “‘Church Bells’ is like ‘Fancy’s’ little sister (laughs) — Reba and ‘Fancy.’ And she gets out and makes a name for herself by, you know, she’s got her dancin’ dress and all that stuff. And this one she starts out, you know, she’s young, she’s pretty, she’s poor — doin’ what she can to survive, meets a man that has a lot of wealth and is supposed to, you know, take care of her and get her out of this.”
She added, “And she ends up with him, and he ends up not being a good guy at all, and it forces her to be strong.”
Reba’s “Fancy” lyrics include, “It was red velvet trim, and it fit me good / Standin’ back from the lookin’ glass / There stood a woman where a half gown kid had stood / She said, “here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down / Here’s your one chance, Fancy, don’t let me down.”
