Zac Brown And His Dad Talk Hard Work, Success And Fatherhood
Life is good for Zac Brown.
He and his band are out with another critically acclaimed album, he’s steadily building Camp Southern Ground in Georgia and he’s been able to show appreciation for his dad Jim through song. Both sat down recently with Sunday Today host Willie Geist to discuss it all.
The Zac Brown Band frontman started on his musical path early and recalled the very moment he decided to make a career of it. “I was 14 [and] was at a coffee house in Dahlonega, Georgia and I was watching Shawn Mullins play. And I knew right then that that’s what I wanted to do.”
Zac and his dad Jim discussed the Georgia restaurant and music venue they opened that allowed Zac to hone both his cooking and music chops. Describing himself as a consummate “hustler,” Zac was clear when asked if he ever doubted he would be successful in music. “There was nobody in the world that could tell me I wasn’t going to get there,” he said.

The conversation eventually turned to ZBB’s current single “My Old Man,” which he first played for his dad last Thanksgiving. “A lot of tears,” the old man admitted when asked of his reaction. “I tear up every time I hear it and even talk about it.” Watch the entire interview here.
