Is Lady Antebellum’s “You Look Good” About Maren Morris?
Every song has a story and Lady Antebellum‘s “You Look Good” is no different. It turns out the trio is singing about Maren Morris, in a roundabout way at least.
The idea for the song was born on a spring night in 2016 at the Nashville live music dive The Basement East, according to Billboard. Songwriter/producer Michael Busbee, known in music circles as Busbee, was in the house with singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd for a 90s Night party.
Also in attendance were Brothers Osborne, Lucie Silvas, Cassadee Pope and Hurd’s girlfriend, Maren Morris, who at one point wowed the crowd with a string of pop covers from the decade. The experience was still fresh on the mind when Busbee and Hurd sat down with songwriter Hillary Lindsay two nights later and hammered out “You Look Good” with the intention of Hurd including it on his own album project.
Hurd ultimately passed on the song, and for a time Thomas Rhett had it on hold. When Rhett decided not to record it, Lady A got to hear it through Busbee, who produced their latest album. They jumped on it, obviously.
So is the song all about Maren? “As one of my friends so eloquently put it, she said, ‘I feel like I sit with Ryan and write love songs about Maren, and I feel like I sit with Maren and write love songs about Ryan,'” Busbee told Billboard. “So we’re writing about Maren, of course, because that’s his love interest.”
As for Hurd, “She’s pretty inspirational,” he added. “I’d be lying if I said that most of the things I write aren’t about her. I think most of the time people take stuff from their own life and try to make it relevant to a lot of people.” Read the entire story in Billboard here.
