Word is coming out of Hollywood that Yellowstone may end after the second half of Season Five. Those episodes will air during the summer.

Deadline is reporting that Taylor Sheridan, co-creator and showrunner Paramount Global and Paramount Network, are moving to end the show in its current form. They are also said to be plotting a potential franchise extension to continue the Dutton saga. Deadline reports they are planning a new show with Matthew McConaughey in talks to star. No word yet on which of the Yellowstone cast will move over to the McConaughey-led series. It is expected to include several of the big stars.

Deadline speculates that the issue with the original Yellowstone series involves star Kevin Costner and disagreements over shooting schedules. Costner apparently only wanted to shoot for 50 days for the first part of the current season. The source also said that the actor only wanted to spend a week shooting the next batch of episodes.

A Paramount Network spokesperson told Deadline, “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone, and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

Costner is currently directing and starring in his multi-part western epic Horizon. He co-wrote that series with Jon Baird. The word is that this is a source of frustration for Sheridan. It is apparently causing morale problems for the other show stars, including Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, and Gil Birmingham. Word is from the “sources” that Paramount Network has declined Costner’s most recent proposal and instead has decided to move on to the other show.
