To get started with downwind paddleboarding, it is essential to have the right equipment. A paddleboard, paddle, and personal flotation device (PFD) are the basic essentials. It is also recommended to wear appropriate clothing and sun protection, and to always check the weather and water conditions before heading out. Saturday downwind SUP paddlboardingwe we had 40 degree air temps and 63 degree water. Winds were at 20mph gust to 30. So, a bit of a challenging adventure. Had us thinking we were out of shape. LOL. High winds, big, hammering waves, the ocean, and no motor tend to do that.

  • Starts At Indian Rocks Beach

Indian Rocks Beach is a popular destination for downwind paddleboarding. Downwind paddleboarding is a unique and exhilarating experience, where a paddleboarder catches the wind and waves to travel long distances along the coast. It’s pretty hard to carry a camera. Some of these waves will destroy a GoPro attached to the board. Been there. I did carry a small waterproof camera and take it out during breaks in the wind. LOL.

  • Scenery And Sunshine

One of the best things about downwind paddleboarding at Indian Rocks Beach is the beautiful scenery. The beach is surrounded by clear blue waters and white sandy beaches, making for a picturesque backdrop as you paddle. The area is also home to a variety of marine life, including dolphins, manatees, and sea turtles, which can often be spotted from the water. When the winds are intense, never, ever, ever, go alone. It may be helpful to bring a doctor. LOL.
