20 Odd City and Town Names In Florida

I've lived in Florida for a decade now and only heard of one of these. There are some seriously weird and funny names once you venture off I-75, I-95 and I-4.

Located in the very northernmost part of Florida near Tallahassee, no one seems to be 100% sure of how this area got its name. One theory is that during the Depression, residents would trade eggs for other goods.

This town sounds like it was made up for one of those "A Florida Man" stories.  It's about 30 miles west of Vero Beach.

Located near Cocoa, it's an old Florida style fishing camp.

This area near Sebring must be a headache for postal workers.

Another one that just sounds made up, but you'll find it northeast of Santa Rosa Beach.

Named after its founder William John Howey who was said to be a citrus grower and real-estate developer. It was originally Howey, Florida... then they added the rest to reflect the hills in the area.

Who wouldn't wanna visit Dogtown!?  Well you maybe... it's about a 4 hour drive north near the Georgia border north of Tallahassee.

Wonder if residents are nicknamed Couch Potatoes.

Near Orlando, their claim to fame has nothing to do with Santa.  Christmas is home to the world's biggest alligator-shaped building. 

I'd hold the Mayo ... visit... it's also way up north near the Georgia border.

Yes, it was actually named after the city in Iraq.

The city up in the Panhandle was actually originally named Boggy.  I think you can agree the new name is... nicer.

Another Panhandle community that's got to be a nightmare for the postal service.

Yep... named after the potatoes they grow.

Only 28 people have ever checked in on Facebook.  They need more visitors.

Up near Jacksonville, the community was named after a woman the local postmaster was infatuated with.  Hope it worked for him.

One of the more fun names on this list to say, they think the name comes from vaca (Spanish for cow) and Hoti ("cowpen").

This one's right here in Hillsborough County yet I've never heard of it. Wonder if they have any restaurants.

A close runner up to Wacahoota for most fun to say, this one's near Orlando.  But don't blink... it's onlyh about 1/4 of a square mile.

We all know this one.  I've still yet to visit, but it's on my to do list.  I need more mermaids in my life.
