A new bakery just opened up in Tarpon Springs' historic district. The Baking Soldier, which welcomed its first customers on Feb. 7, 2025, combines delicious treats with a mission to help local veteran programs.

Behind the counter is Hayley Johnson, a former U.S. Navy Military Police Officer. Her business will donate a portion of its profits to help build Palm Harbor's Purple Heart Park, a project supported by the Pinellas County Veteran Association.

The display cases are stocked with fresh chocolates and baked goods. While chocolate-covered strawberries are currently the most popular item, Johnson is getting ready to introduce more premium Belgian chocolate treats.

Johnson's journey to opening this Florida shop includes some notable successes. After finishing in the top four at New York State's business competition, she landed a prized catering deal with MSNBC. She then made her way to Broadway, providing sweets for the cast of "Chicago."

“I am partnering with the Pinellas County Veteran Association, and that will be who the money, a portion of proceeds will go back to,” Johnson explained to Suncoast News, reiterating her commitment to giving back."

In 2015, both the White House and Glamour Magazine recognized Johnson's work supporting veterans. She worked in corporate finance and real estate after leaving the military, but eventually found her way back to baking.

This shop offers more than just sweets. Along with making treats, the bakery hosts cooking classes and wine and chocolate pairings. First responders get free coffee during community events.

When COVID-19 arrived, Johnson decided to make Florida her home. She saw an opportunity to combine her love of baking with helping veterans.

That early business competition led to big results, it's now helped thousands of students and generated $150 million for the economy. The rules require students to keep 50% ownership and limit fundraising to under $100,000.

Through her baking expertise and military background, Johnson's shop proves that sweet success can make a real difference.
