Florida College Offering New Jimmy Buffett Class
You can take a Jimmy Buffett class now at a Florida college. The University of Florida offers a class that pays tribute to Jimmy Buffett. The class will study his life and work and it is called (Un)common Arts: Son Of A Son Of A Sailor. this will be part of the University of Florida’s honors college and will only have 12 students in the class. The class will only be one credit. And of course, the class will start at 5:10 PM in honor of Jimmy Buffett on the song “It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere.”
What Students Will Study During The Jimmy Buffett Class
Students of the Jimmy Buffett class will study his songwriting and charitable efforts, they will search archives and conduct interviews to document Jimmy’s connection to Gainesville, where the University of Florida is.
Instructor Melissa L. Johnson, Ph.D., says, “I hope that the students gain a larger appreciation of him, more than just his main songs.I want them to appreciate the depth of the music as well as what a gifted storyteller and songwriter he was, but also look at his legacy and impact – including the recent renaming of State Road A1A to Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway.”
Jimmy Buffett passed away on September 1, 2023 at the age of 76.

Of course we know his Margaritaville restaurant but, he also had another restaurant chain called Cheeseburger In Paradise. That restaurant chain ended up closing in 2020. His Margaritaville cafe on the Las Vegas strip is the top grossing restaurant in the nation. He also owns a clothing line, alcohol and casinos. Jimmy also has his own brand of beer called Landshark Lager.
Jimmy’s most famous song has has its name everywhere. The Margaritaville cottages, which are in Kissimmee, are vacation rentals. There is a retirement village called Latitude Margaritaville with locations in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Watersound, Florida and Daytona Beach.
