Florida City Named In New York Times’ Top Travel Destination 2024
2024 is here and that means people are beginning to plan out their vacations for the year. Places like Miami and Orlando always come to mind for their beaches, attractions and theme parks, but this year there’s a new top spot in the Sunshine State. The New York Times recently released their top travel destinations in 2024 and one Florida spot made the cut.
Flamingo, FL took the final spot on the “52 Places to go in 2024” list and is the only Florida city to be named on the list. Flamingo is located at the most southern tip of the Florida Peninsula and sits inside the Everglades. Visitors find exotic wildlife, campgrounds and other outdoor activities within a short drive from Miami.
What puts Flamingo on the Top Travel Destinations in 2024?
For starters, Flamingo sits right in the heart of the Florida Everglades. It has been nearly impossible to stay anywhere with air conditioning, in Flamingo, since 2005. Two hurricanes destroyed the only hotel in Flamingo and since then, only those willing to set up camp or an RV could stay the night.
In November 2023, the newly renovated Flamingo Lodge changed everything. Built from shipping containers and elevated off the ground, the new Flamingo Lodge was back up and running. The visitor center and restaurant were also renovated and elevated to withstand the elements.
Patricia Mazzei says, “The return of the beloved facilities, along with glamping “eco-tents,” has given birders, stargazers and anglers a reason to reconnect with the outpost of Flamingo, on mainland Florida’s southernmost tip and less than two hours by car from Miami. And if you’re lucky, you may spot flamingos in Florida Bay.”
