Average Amount Of Money People Spend On Their Pets
There is a a new study that shows the average amount of money people spend on their pets. The survey was done by OnePoll for MetLife Pet Insurance. They asked 2,000 cat and dog owners about how much they spend during a year and it’s not a small number. The average pet parent spends about $4,800 a year on their pet.
According to the survey over the course of a year, pet owners spend $633 on food. Additionally people spend even more on treats. The study found that people spend $645 on treats for their pets. Animal owners also spend almost $600 on each toys and clothes for their pet. Overall, the most expensive pet cost is health care, at an average of $1,242 for vet visits.
Animal owners tried to budget the amount they’d spend on their pet but, they only averaged $2,640. They ended up spending nearly twice that. 41% say they spend more on their pets than anticipated this year. 44% of people polled predict they’ll spend even more on their pet in the year ahead. Additionally, 83% of pet owners say there’s no limit on how much they’d spend to make sure their pet is happy and healthy.
Pet Insurance Is An Option To help With Costs
“Our survey found almost half of pet parents (45%) said their pet went through a major health event this year, but unfortunately, 82% of them weren’t financially prepared for the cost of this,” said Brian Jorgensen, CEO of Pet Insurance at MetLife. “With heightened spending across all areas of pet parenting, the last thing they need is an unexpected and expensive vet bill. Pet insurance can help with this, allowing pet parents to protect both their furry family members and their budgets.”
63% usually buy their pet a present for Christmas. Also, many pet owners also make pet-related New Year’s resolutions. Those include spending more quality time with their animals and being more proactive about their health. Finally, 64% of people polled are considering getting a new pet in 2024 to keep their pet company.
