On certain areas of the internet, most notably the Reddit thread r/Florida, it’s just non-stop complaining about how much they hate it here. I get it, Florida isn’t for everyone. Personally, I’ve lived in several states, and Florida is by far my favorite. But what if you’re ready to go? If you leave Florida, where do you go?

According to Business Insider, many Floridians are cashing out, selling their homes, and moving to neighboring states. I could sell my Estero house right now and buy a bigger house in North Carolina for half as much. I’d be mortgage-free. But I really like it here, and I love my neighbors. But what about the people they are leaving? Where are they going?

Data from Realtor.com shows the top states where people in Florida searched for homes.  Here’s the top 3.

3. Tennessee: 2.39% were looking at Tennessee as their next home. I’ve spent some time there, love the people and the nature. And the winters aren’t too bad.

2. North Carolina: 3.75% were eyeing this move. I’ll admit, this one is on my list, too. That’s if I were to move. We used to vacation on the Outer Banks and loved it there.

1. Georgia: 3.97%. The top out-of-state search. And this isn’t a new thing. In 2021, 49,163 people left Florida to go to Georgia. It’s like they didn’t want to go too far. AP News reported “Georgia was the most popular destination for residents leaving Florida last year and that outflow jumped from more than 49,000 residents in 2021 to more than 51,000 people in 2022.” This was easily offset by the 50,000 people that moved from California to Florida, taking their place here in the Sunshine State.

Outside of the list, 1.26% of people ready to leave Florida were looking at relocating to New York. With the huge influx of New Yorkers here in the Sunshine State, it looks like some of them are ready to leave Florida and move back. Bye! And if you need some extra incentive…..
