Kane Brown Uses Phil Collins Sample In New Song

Author Nancy Brooks // Country Writer, Beasley Media Group
September 22nd 11:29 AM

Kane Brown’s new song “I Can Feel It” is getting a lot of attention  because it uses the iconic drum fill from Phil Collins’ 1981 hit “In The Air Tonight.”

In a recent interview, Kane talked about having the Phil Collins sample in the song. He said he “got it originally” when he was playing Stagecoach in April. Brown noted, “I wanted Phil Collins to come out on stage with me; I thought it would be cool.” Collins has sung on several hits from his band Genesis and as a solo artist, but he’s also a highly respected drummer.  Unfortunately, due to health issues, Collins is no longer able to play the drums. Last year, Genesis played their final show of a reunion tour; Collins sang on the tour, but didn’t play drums. He hasn’t performed since that show.

So, the rock icon did not join Kane on stage that night, but he did give his blessing on using the sample in the song. Brown says he ended up “writing to his song.” He revealed, “We were sampling that big drum fill, and the title is ‘I Can Feel It,’ so it’s, I can feel it in the air tonight.”

Kane’s lyrics of his new song include, “I can feel it in the air, feel it in the whiskey in my hand / In your hips, your body tells me when you start to dance / Maybe this is turning to a “We should probably get up out of here” / Oh, baby, I swear, I can feel it in the air (I can feel it) / I can feel it.”

Brown recently talked about how he went from Lowe’s employee to country music superstar in a new interview on NBC News’s Sunday Today with Willie Geist,, which will air on Sunday (9/17).

Kane said he was working at Lowe’s, mixing paint and doing a lot of singing: “I was singing. My buddy ended up hearing me and telling me to try out for the talent show.”

He said that he got an encore when he tried out for the talent show. It was the encore that “sparked” his desire to sing. He said, “That’s what sparked everything.”

12 Kane Brown Songs That Made Him A Superstar

  • 12. “What Ifs” (featuring Lauren Alaina) 2017

    Share

The song is about a couple where the question "what if" is asked repeatedly about what would happen in their relationship. The song is a duet with Kane’s high school friend Lauren Alaina.

  • 11. “Lose It,” 2018

    Share

Kane said of the song, "I fell in love with this song, it was really exciting, it was really uptempo. It’s one of my favorite songs, so I hope you enjoy it." The song's video features Brown performing in the desert with a vintage Camaro.

  • 10. “One Thing Right” (with Marshmello) 2019

    Share

What a collaboration! The lyrics are about a man who lies, steals, and always gets himself in trouble. The only thing he doesn't screw up is the love he's somehow found while being such a rascal. Brown described the song as "kind of the opposite" of Marshmello's collaboration with Bastille, "Happier."

  • 9. “One Mississippi,” 2021

    Share

Kane said the song covered a relationship about "where you makeup and you break up, and you just keep running into each other, and then something about that spark in the relationship gets y’all back together and may fall apart again." The video features "the story of a lovestruck pair."

  • 8. “Blessed & Free” (with H.E.R.) 2021

    Share

His new collaboration her H.E.R., and what a wonderful song! The video for the song is black and white and quite powerful.

  • 7. “Homesick” 2019

    Share

Brown co-wrote the song about his own "experience traveling on the road and being away from his loved ones," but he dedicated it to military families.

  • 6. “Famous Friends” (with Chris Young) 2020

    Share

Chris Young put this song on the album of the same name, and he and fellow native Tennessean Kane filmed a video for it. A great song, and Brown brings famous people to his concert to come and sing it with him. In 2021, he brought out quarterback Patrick Mahomes and actor Taylor Lautner to name a few.

  • 5. “Cool Again” (featuring Nelly) 2020

    Share

Brown wrote the song at a songwriter's retreat during the wintertime. In August 2020, Brown remixed the song featuring rapper Nelly. This remix also received a music video featuring the two singers on a beach.

  • 4. “Heaven” 2017

    Share

A gem of a song. Kane first discovered the song at a writer's retreat where he heard it from through the floor while he was working on another song ("What's Mine Is Yours") upstairs. "Heaven" reached number one on the US Country Airplay chart in 2018, becoming Brown's second number one on the chart.

  • 3. “Worship You” 2020

    Share

This could be the perfect love song! Brown released "Worship You" for his wife, Katelyn Jae. "Worship You" depicted his belief in their love, comparing it to his belief in the Bible. Kane said, "When we were writing it, we didn't know what to write about. I think we tried like four different songs before we wrote that song... But I remember us writing it. It came, you know, so fluidly. We actually wrote it pretty fast."

  • 2. “Thank God”

    Share

This is an amazing duet with his wife, Katelyn Brown. It was released on September 12, 2022, as the fourth single from Kane Brown's third studio album, "Different Man." The couple has wanted to do a song together for six years, and this was just the perfect choice.

  • 1. “Worldwide Beautiful” 2020

    Share

An amazing song for the ages! Kane told Variety, “As an artist, you want to release a song that everybody can relate to and not argue about. So, I don’t think there’s anything arguable in the song. It’s just saying everybody should be treated the same, and stop looking at colors, because everybody’s worldwide beautiful… I hope the song gets more life."
