Florida Man Finds 200 Year Old Clam On Beach
Florida Man finds 200 year old clam on beach. The 200-year-old giant clam was found by a man and his family at Alligator Point, Florida. Blaine Parker initially thought the clam was just big enough for two servings of chowder, but upon realizing it was more than two centuries old, he decided to name it Aber-clam Lincoln and release it back into the sea.
The age of the clam was calculated by counting the layers on its shell, with each layer representing a year. Aber-clam Lincoln had 214 layers, which means it was born in 1809, the same year as Abraham Lincoln. The lab also noted that most Ocean quahog clams weigh only around half a pound, making Aber-clam Lincoln five times the weight of an average clam.
Parker, who is a member of the volunteer group AmeriCorps and a specimen collector for the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab in Panacea, brought the clam to the lab for analysis. However, he ultimately decided to return the clam to the Gulf of Mexico after realizing its age and rarity.
The story of Aber-clam Lincoln serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting our marine life. We never know what hidden treasures lie beneath the sea, and it is our responsibility to ensure that they remain there for future generations to discover and enjoy. Insider
