Worlds oldest bar 2700 B.C. discovered. Imagine walking into a bar, ordering a beer, and getting served dates and dried fish as a snack. Sounds odd? Well, this was the experience for patrons at what archaeologists believe could be the world’s oldest-known bar. That's right. No chips, pretzels, or planters nuts. This bar could never survive in Ybor or on the beach!
Recently, an international team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pisa announced the discovery of a site in Iraq that could contain the oldest tavern ever found. Located in the ancient Sumerian city-state of Lagash, the structure dates back to around 2700 B.C.
The bar features an open courtyard, benches, and a large open cooking area with a 10-foot-wide mud-brick oven. Archaeologists also discovered a primitive refrigerator called a “zeer” in Arabic, which consisted of two bottomless clay jars that used evaporation to cool perishable items.
In one of the rooms, the team found a large quantity of conical bowls that held ready-to-eat food, and jars that they think contained beer. According to Holly Pittman, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and project director of the excavation, the bowls and jars indicate that the bar was like a McDonald’s with prepared food for fast service.
This crazy discovery sheds new light on the ancient history of bars and taverns, and how they functioned in ancient societies. would have thought that a simple beer order and a plate of dates and dried fish could hold so much archaeological significance? TBT
