Just another feather in the cap of our part of the Sunshine State. The best pizza pie in the country is here in Tampa Bay.
We’re called “Champa Bay” for a reason. Yeah, we have the Bucs, the Bolts, the Rowdies, and the Rays. But in Safety Harbor, we also have The Nona Slice House. We should refer to this pizza establishment as the award-winning Nona’s Slice House. Owner Jamie Culliton brings over 25 years of pizza making experience to this Safety Harbor staple. His take on the classic Margherita pizza has brought him accolades and awards.
If you’re not familiar with the Margherita pizza, it’s not your traditional tomato sauce and cheese pie. The pizza’s three toppings of basil, mozzarella, and tomato, represent the flag of Italy. Actually, the Margherita pizza was created to represent the unification of Italy in the 1800’s.
Now, you’re probably asking yourselves: “How can a three-ingredient pizza win awards?” Jamie Culliton has the answer and the magic touch. “We start with our dough made in-house, what we want is a really nice and thin crust going around it,” Culliton said. “We hand stretch it, we work it around the edge, so we end up with a really nice thin and crispy crust.”
It doesn’t stop there. Next, hand-sliced mozzarella is placed on the dough and Culliton leaves gaps between the pieces. He dabs the San Marzano tomato sauce between the mozzarella. “Where there’s no cheese there’s sauce, where there’s no sauce there’s cheese,” said Culliton. “When this cooks it melts together, you’re going to get a fully covered pizza, without it being too soggy or overloaded.”
The final piece of this award winning pizza pie is the fresh basil and extra virgin olive oil. How good is the final result? Nona’s Margherita pizza won the 2011 “Best Pizza in America” at the American Pizza Championship.
