Venomous Caterpillars Are Now Appearing In Florida
Just another thing to be on the lookout for as you walk outside. Venomous caterpillars are now appearing in Florida.
These caterpillars, known as the puss caterpillar, are found near oak, elm, and citrus trees. The inch long insects are covered in hair-like bristles with an orange streak frequently running down its back. What’s hidden in those hairs are stiff spines attached to poison glands! Touch the puss caterpillar and those spines break off into your skin and cause extreme pain that radiates though your body! Here’s what these little venomous darlings look like:

What do you do if you are the victim of the puss caterpillar? Here’s what’s recommended:
- Place clear tape over the affected area
- Strip off repeatedly to remove spines
- Make sure not to use the same piece of tape twice
- Apply ice packs to reduce the stinging sensation
- Follow with a paste of baking soda and water
You can also use an oral antihistamine, and hydrocortisone cream to help with the pain. Don’t let these venomous caterpillars ruin your time outside in Florida. Keep your eyes open and keep your distance! [SOURCE Fox 13]
