Is Florida The Cause Of Flight Cancellations And Travel Delays?
We guess that being the biggest tourist destination in the country comes with some problems. Some believe that Florida is the cause of the recent rash of flight cancellations and travel delays.
In a recent study, the four major airports in the Sunshine State; Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, and Orlando were in the top five for worst in on-time flight arrivals. About one-third of all flights from every major airline cross Florida airspace. Wonky weather and excessive air traffic can lead to delays. On top of that, airline and airport staffing shortages add to delays and cancellations.
These issues aren’t just confined to the larger airports. Smaller Florida airports like Palm Beach and Ft. Myers are experiencing flight cancellations and travel delays that are above the national average. Another cause for the travel mess is that the FAA’s Jacksonville Air Traffic Control Center isn’t fully staffed. To fix this, the FAA is looking to hire 1,500 air traffic controllers in the coming fiscal year.
Sadly, these delays and cancellations are things tourists have to deal with when they visit Florida. Hopefully the staffing issues will lessen as more people are hired. [SOURCE New York Post]
