Weekdays 3p-7p

Just another day on the job for the men and women of law enforcement. St. Petersburg Police had a life-changing encounter with a pelican.

St. Pete Police’s Marine Unit was patrolling near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge when they spotted a pelican in distress. As they got closer, the officers saw that the pelican was severely entangled in fishing line. The bird had the hook embedded in it’s shoulder and it’s beak. The quick-thinking police officers managed to get the pelican aboard their boat and they headed toward shore.

Waiting at the dock was a marine biologist from Eckerd College. She managed to get the hook out and cut off all the fishing line. The pelican was released and it swam away.

Of course these heroics were captured on video:

Pelican Rescue

Pelican Rescue!Fishing hooks and lines can be a nightmare for curious seabirds, That was the case recently when officers with the SPPD Marine Patrol Unit found a pelican entangled in a fishing line and hook in Tampa Bay near the Skyway Bridge. Thanks to the assistance of a marine biologist and other members of the Eckerd College Search and Rescue team, Officer S. Pierce was able to free the pelican and release it back into the water. Great teamwork!
