$48 Billion Makes Publix One Of America’s Biggest Retailers But Not #1
$48 Billion has made Publix one of America’s biggest retailers, but they are not #1. A website called Stacker has complied a list of the 50 biggest retailers in America. The retailers are ranked by its 2021 retail sales, with the number of U.S. stores serving as a tiebreaker.
Publix’s headquarters are right here in Lakeland and they rank #13 on the list. Here is what the website says about Publix, “Publix ranks among the top regional grocery store chains, with stores operating in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. The supermarket company continually ranks on Fortune’s Best Companies To Work For list, and is publicly owned by current and former employees and the family of founder George W. Jenkins.”
Their 2021 worldwide retail sales were $48 Billion and they have 1,598 stores in the United States. George Jenkins opened the very first Publix on September 6, 1930 in a 3,000 square foot building located at 58 Northwest 4th Street in Winter Haven.
Publix is one of America’s biggest retailers, but not #1.
The #1 retailer in the United States in Walmart. They had 2021 worldwide retail sales at $459.51 Billion with 5,326 stores in the nation. Here is what the site says about Walmart, “The world’s largest company by revenues, the world’s largest private employer, and the largest grocery retailer in the U.S., Walmart operates under 46 names in 24 countries.”

- #8 – CVS Health Corporation has $93.36 Billion in sales with 9,773 stores
- #9 – Lowe’s Companies has $87.73 Billion is sales with 1,737 U.S. stores
- #10 – Albertson’s has retail sales of $71.87 Billion with 2,320 stores.
