The Tampa Bay Rays open the 2022 season on Friday, April 8th at the Trop and the team has named the opening day starting pitcher for the game. Shane McClanahan will start the game for the Rays.
This is the first time in his career Shane is the opening day starter. Shane played his college baseball at USF.
Shane spoke to the Tampa Bay Times and said, “I think you get what you work for and I’ve had this mindset my entire life of, you know, I want to do what I think I’m capable of. And I think I’m just starting to find out what I’m capable of. So there’s a lot more to go.”
Shane is 24-years-old and will be the second youngest opening day starter in Rays history. Scott Kazmir was the opening day starter in 2007 and he was 23-years-old.
Before Shane went to college at USF he attended high school at Cape Coral High School. Shane was drafted by the Rays in the 1st round in 2018.
